Among the characters from the Passion and Death of Jesus, the identities of Mary of James and Mary Cleophe are the most elusive ones. Mary of James or popularly known as Maria Jacobe is mentioned in the Synoptic Gospels, while Mary of Cleophe, Maria Cleophas, in the Gospel of John.
Scholars cannot agree on this issue. One school of thought supports that these two women are distinct from each other while the other one identifies Mary Jacobe as Mary Cleophe. One thing for sure its remain open for discussion.
Recently, some literatures claim that the new edition of the Roman Martyrology 2004 has finally declared that Mary Mother of James is really Mary Cleophe. In other words, Mary of James does not exists.
This is a serious matter which needs a careful analysis of the said document. The Roman Martyrology is a book which contains brief entries on Roman Catholic Saints. Three things we have to remember, not all saints are included on this book, second all entries are in latin and lastly entries are very brief.
Commemoration of Holy Women of Jerusalem, Mary Cleophe and Salome, who were together with Mary Magdalen, came early Sunday morning to the Sepulchre of Our Lord to annoint his body and became the first witnesses to his resurrection.
